Engineers Find Creative Solution to Fix Communication Problem
46-Year-Old Spacecraft Now Transmitting Readable Data
After months of troubleshooting, NASA engineers have successfully fixed a communication glitch that had prevented them from receiving readable data from the Voyager 1 probe. This marks the first time in five months that engineers have been able to establish proper communication with the spacecraft.
The glitch, which was located in Voyager 1's flight data subsystem (FDS), caused the spacecraft to send back unreadable data to Earth. The FDS is responsible for packaging the data before it is sent back to Earth.
To fix the problem, NASA engineers had to remotely reconfigure Voyager 1's software. This was a complex and risky procedure, as any mistake could have permanently damaged the spacecraft.
After weeks of testing, engineers were able to successfully reconfigure the software and restore communication with Voyager 1. The spacecraft is now once again sending back meaningful data to Earth.
Voyager 1 is the Earth's most distant spacecraft, having traveled more than 14 billion miles from Earth. It was launched in 1977, and has provided scientists with invaluable data about the outer planets and beyond.
