Earth Moves Faster Than Voyager Spacecrafts

Voyager 1 Escapes Solar System at High Speed

Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 are two spacecrafts that were launched in 1977 to explore the outer planets of our solar system. They have since traveled billions of miles and are now in interstellar space. However, despite traveling for over 40 years, they are still not moving as fast as Earth.

Earth orbits the sun at a speed of about 67,000 miles per hour. Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 are both traveling at about 38,000 miles per hour. This means that Earth is actually moving faster than the Voyager spacecrafts. This is only because of the Sun's gravitational pull on the Earth. Earth is constantly falling toward the Sun, and the Sun's gravity is pulling Earth into an orbit around it. Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 are not orbiting the Sun, so they are not being pulled in by the Sun's gravity. Instead, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 are moving in a straight line through space. However, because Earth is moving in orbit, it is actually moving faster than Voyager 1 and Voyager 2.

Voyager 1 will be 104 billion kilometers (65 billion miles) from Earth and is departing the solar system. Voyager 1 is literally venturing into the great unknown and is approaching interstellar space. Voyager 1 is currently zipping through space at around 38,000 mph (17 kilometers per second).
