ACM Turing Award 2018: Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yann LeCun Honored
Co-recipients Recognized for Conceptual and Engineering Contributions to Deep Learning
Canada Research Chair Tier 2 (2000), Canada Research Chair Tier 1 (2006)
The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) has announced that Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yann LeCun have been named the recipients of the 2018 ACM AM Turing Award for their conceptual and engineering contributions to deep learning, a groundbreaking field in artificial intelligence (AI).
"Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yann LeCun are recognized as the godfathers of AI," said ACM President Cherri M. Pancake. "Their pioneering work has had a transformative impact on the field and has led to significant advances in areas such as computer vision, natural language processing, and robotics.
Bengio is a professor at the University of Montreal. Hinton is a professor at the University of Toronto. LeCun is a professor at New York University. All three researchers have made significant contributions to the development of deep learning, which is a type of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks to learn from data.
The ACM AM Turing Award is the most prestigious award in computing. It is given annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to the theoretical foundations of computer science and to the practical development of computer technology.
